Ocean Geopolitics Centre

Privacy Policy

Provisional version. This text describes the processing the website actually carries out, but it must still be approved by the Board of SOAMAR Brasil em Portugal before final publication — in particular the data protection contact and the location of the hosting servers.

The Ocean Geopolitics Centre respects your privacy. This policy explains which personal data we collect through this website, why, for how long, and what your rights are under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR — Regulation (EU) 2016/679) and Portuguese Law No. 58/2019.

1. Data controller

The Ocean Geopolitics Centre is an initiative of SOAMAR Brasil em Portugal – Associação dos Amigos da Marinha do Brasil em Portugal (Association of Friends of the Brazilian Navy in Portugal), tax number 513 746 412, headquartered in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, which is the controller of the personal data collected on this website.

For any question about your personal data, or to exercise your rights, please contact us at: [email address to be provided by the Board].

2. What data we collect and why

Newsletter

If you subscribe to the newsletter, we process:

  • your email address (required) and your name (optional);
  • the language in which you prefer to receive our communications;
  • the date and time of your consent, the version of the consent text you accepted and the form you used;
  • the originating IP address, stored only in anonymised form (the last block is removed).

Purpose: to send you information about the Centre’s publications, events and training activities. Legal basis: your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR). Your subscription only becomes active once you confirm your address through the link we send you by email (double opt-in).

You may withdraw your consent at any time, using the unsubscribe link included in every email or by contacting us. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal.

Browsing the website

To keep the website running and secure, the hosting server logs technical data for each request (IP address, date and time, page requested, browser). Legal basis: legitimate interest in the security and proper operation of the website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We do not use these data to identify visitors or to build profiles.

3. Cookies

The website only uses cookies that are necessary for it to work: one that remembers your chosen language (Portuguese or English) and one that stores your cookie preferences. We do not currently use analytics or advertising cookies.

Some articles include videos from external platforms (Blogger/Google). These services may set their own cookies when the video is displayed, under their own privacy policies.

You can review your choices at any time through the “Manage cookies” link in the footer of every page.

4. How long we keep the data

  • Unconfirmed sign-ups: automatically deleted after 30 days.
  • Active subscribers: for as long as the subscription remains active.
  • After unsubscribing: we keep only your email address and the subscription and cancellation dates, to make sure we do not contact you again and to be able to demonstrate GDPR compliance. You may ask for these data to be fully erased.
  • Technical server logs: for the period set by the hosting provider for security purposes.

5. Who we share the data with

We do not sell or hand over your data to third parties for commercial purposes. The data may be processed on our behalf, and only for the purposes described above, by the following service providers (processors):

  • the provider that hosts the website and the email service;
  • the newsletter sending platform, once one is adopted — this policy will be updated to name it.

Should any of these providers process data outside the European Economic Area, the transfer will only take place with the safeguards set out in Chapter V GDPR (for example, an adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission).

6. Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

  • access your personal data and obtain a copy;
  • have inaccurate data rectified;
  • have your data erased;
  • restrict or object to the processing;
  • receive your data in a structured, commonly used format (portability);
  • withdraw your consent at any time.

To exercise these rights, contact us at the address given in section 1. We will reply within one month. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority, the Portuguese Data Protection Authority (CNPD — www.cnpd.pt).

7. Security

The website runs exclusively over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Access to the subscriber list is restricted to the site administrators, and IP addresses are anonymised at the moment of collection.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes to the website or to the law. The current version is always available on this page, together with the date of the last update.

Last updated: 1 October 2026.
